Birth on the Alp

Everybody is excited, cow “Edelweiss” is about to give birth on Alp Heuboden. In fact her due date is 20 days past and Fritz watches over her day and night.

Mother's rough tongue awakes the calf and after a while it gets up on its wobbly legs.

And then everything went quick: Under a blue sky and completely alone Edelweiss gives birth to a cute male calf. Still a bit unsure the cow sniffs at the wet calf, but it doesn’t take long until Edelweiss starts to lick the newborn with its rough tongue. This certainly awakes the calf from its dreams, it tries to get up although the legs are still wobbly.

Essential for survival: The newborn immediately seeks the mother's teats to drink the "Biestmilch".

Nature is such a wonderful thing. Instictively the calf goes for the mother’s teats to suck the thick, sticky, rich “Biestmilch” that is essential to strengthen the immune system in order to survive. Still birth is a strenuous act for mother and calf. So they lay down together in the cool grass and relax. Lydia Tschudi
